Featured Project: Evaluation of GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs)
Under subcontract to Metis Associates, Branch Associates recently completed a five-year qualitative study of GEAR UP, a federally-funded program in seven Philadelphia public high schools. GEAR UP provides six-year grants to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. Branch Associates examined the implementation of the program, first in middle schools and then in high schools, to assess program fidelity, successes, challenges, and promising practices of the school year and summer programming. Branch Associates collected annual data through interviews with program, school, and district staff, focus groups with students, and program observations. Branch Associates also conducted online surveys with school principals, teachers, and staff to assess program sustainability and adherence to program implementation models.
